Last Shabbat, we read Parshat Shekalim, a special Torah reading instituted one month before Nissan, the first month of the biblical year, when daily, Sabbath, and festival sacrifices needed to be purchased with new funds. Since the Temple's destruction, the Rabbi's instituted the custom of donating to the upkeep of the synagogue/community in remembrance of the Holy Temple.
This year, we're excited to announce a Shekalim Matching Challenge grant of $5,000 to help support our new Security Officer position - thanks to the passion and generosity of Barry & Marian Bessler and Fred Adler! So essentially, every half-shekel you donate will be doubled into a full shekel (up to $5,000). The thinking behind the Shekalim Matching Challenge is for the entire community to participate in this (unfortunately) essential cause.
